Taking the Pain Out of Car Crashes - Online Car Insurance Claim Filing

So you have had an accident. Take a deep breath and calm down. I have been involved in a crash as a passenger and I am a career EMT. I know firsthand how this advice is easier said than done, but it is paramount that you try. Too many details are overlooked or forgotten when emotions and adrenalin are running high. Also don't stress the accident insurance form filing. Many times it can easily be filed at the online car insurance company's website.

1) Take care of yourself. If you feel any pain what-so-ever, get checked at the emergency department of a hospital. Everything can wait until you know you are physically OK, even the police reports and filing the online car insurance claims. Do not let the other driver or police officer pressure you into anything. Enlist the help of the EMT's. They are often more than happy to lock the doors of the ambulance in order to protect your privacy.

2) After being given the OK by the emergency doctor, you will have to tackle the task of completing a police report. The small hiatus you had while being assessed by the doctor also has given you time to rehash what happened and form your answers in your head. Taking time to think often creates a clearer picture and makes writing the events down a lot easier. If you do not visit the emergency room, you have every right to ask the police officer for a few minutes to calm down and collect your thoughts. If it is a crash where the police do not show and you exchange personal information, never let the other driver hand you a piece of paper with their info on it. They can easily falsify the information. You should always ask to see their license and insurance card and copy the information yourself. Don't forget to write down the license plate number and ask for a phone number.

3) Now it is time to make first notice of an auto accident to your insurance company. This needs to be done even if you were not at fault. Tell your insurance company as soon as possible or have someone do it for you if you cannot. Many online car insurance companies have forms you can fill out right from the website, others require a phone call. If you were at fault, there's a good chance your coverage will increase. While reporting the accident, ask about a new auto insurance quote so you don't have any surprises when you get your next bill.

Online car insurance filing is fast and relatively easy. Most of the time it only takes a few minutes. Always follow up with a phone call if you haven't heard from your insurance company within 24 hours. A lot of the bigger companies also have online claims tracking that you can access from your account. This feature gives many customers peace of mind by being able to track the claims process.

Being involved in a crash is a stressful event, but it doesn't have to turn into a headache. Take good care of yourself first, then follow the law by filing the police report. After the crises has abated and things calm down, inform your insurance company, even if you were not at fault. They will assist you in making the claims process a lot smoother and help your life return to normal.
